We had a fantastic turnout for our holiday party in December. We wrote and then as we munched and sipped, we chatted and shared some of our writing goals for 2017. Special thanks to founding member and former secretary and board member Marianne Lonsdale for hosting the end-of-the-year shindig at her beautiful home.
Many of you know our origin story—a group of us used to meet at a bookstore and five years ago, that space was repurposed, marking the end of the writing group.
It was Laurel Hilton who stood up and said, “I think we can do this ourselves. We can find another meeting spot. We can book speakers, have a website. We can do this.” She gathered a dozen like-minded writing parents and Write on Mamas was born.
Laurel has been our Chief Mama Officer for five years. She’s the brain behind the organization who reads the fine print on the documents—be they from the BOE regarding county sales tax or from the IRS regarding nonprofit status. She makes sure our t’s are crossed and the i’s are dotted and without her, there would be no Write on Mamas. Period.
So it is with great pride that the board has given Laurel the distinction of WoM of the Year for her work and dedication. Established in 2013, (by Laurel Hilton), the WoM of the Year is awarded to a member who has gone above and beyond to make the organization shine and thrive. Previous WoM of the Year awardees have been Teri Stevens (2015), Claire Hennessey (2014), and Janine Kovac (2013). WoM’s shoestring budget means that there is no paid staff. We are a 100% volunteer organization. WoM of the Year is a small way to show our appreciation. The award varies from year to year. This year the board chose to give Laurel a gift certificate for a stay at the gorgeous Cavallo Point.
